Handwriting

Handwriting at Cottam Primary School focuses on the process of joined-up cursive letter formation. We use an online resource called Letter-join. This is a resource for teaching cursive handwriting at school and at home. It uses interactive animations to demonstrate joined-up letter formation.

In Reception children begin to learn how to print letters.

In Year 1 we begin to develop pre-cursive handwriting where we learn to form letters with a lead out. We develop correct letter formation of lowercase and capital letters, numbers and symbols.

In Year 2 we continue to practise our handwriting skills to further develop letter formation and orientation of letters. We progress onto learning to join letters and develop our fluency and speed of writing.

From Year 3 onwards, we will continue to write in a cursive style (see above example). Regular practise in Year 3 will help us improve the legibility, consistency and quality and in Year 4 will allow us to practise applying size-appropriate handwriting to all areas of the curriculum. In Years 5 and 6 we will be able to produced cursive handwriting automatically across all areas.
