Year 3 Reading
Reading at School
At Cottam, we believe that reading is the key to unlocking a world of learning, imagination and opportunity. We promote reading across all areas of our curriculum, helping children to understand, explore and make connections with the world around them.
We want every child to develop a love of reading for pleasure and to discover books, authors and stories that inspire, excite and spark their curiosity. From sharing stories in class to reading independently, we provide children with regular opportunities to enjoy books and talk about what they have read.
Reading is not just something we do in English—it is an essential part of every subject. Whether children are exploring history, discovering new scientific ideas or solving mathematical problems, strong reading skills help them to access and enjoy their learning.
Most importantly, we want our children to become confident, enthusiastic readers who choose to read because they enjoy it.
Children in Year 3 will have the opportunity to read a wide range of texts, both in small groups and independently, allowing them to develop their reading skills, broaden their vocabulary and discover different authors, genres and styles. In addition, children will have the opportunity to read and study the following books as a whole class, giving them the chance to explore texts in greater depth and share their ideas, opinions and responses with their peers.
Reading at Home
We encourage families to share books, stories and reading experiences at home, helping us to nurture a lifelong love of reading. We encourage all children to read every night and talk about the texts they are enjoying. Sharing a book, asking questions and discussing characters, events and new vocabulary can make a huge difference to your child’s reading development while also helping to nurture a genuine love of books. To support you with this at home, we have included some reading prompts below to help you start conversations and explore your child’s reading together.
