Safe Recruitment

At Cottam Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of our children is our highest priority. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people, and we expect every member of staff, volunteer and governor to share this commitment in all aspects of their work.

We work hard to create a safe and supportive environment where children can learn, grow and thrive. As part of this commitment, we follow robust safer recruitment procedures to help ensure that all adults working with our pupils are suitable to do so.

When recruiting new staff and volunteers, the Headteacher and Governing Body carefully consider a range of information and safeguarding checks before any appointment is made. These checks may include:

  • An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

  • Children's barred list checks

  • Prohibition checks for teachers

  • Disqualification declarations where required

  • Verification of identity, qualifications and employment history

  • References from previous employers

  • Information gathered through the interview process

  • Any other checks required by safeguarding legislation and guidance

These thorough procedures help us maintain a safe school community and ensure that children remain protected, supported and cared for by trusted adults at all times.
