Miss A Hyland is the subject lead for Science at Cottam.
At Cottam Primary School, we want every child to develop a sense of curiosity and excitement about the world around them. Through Science, children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and discover how and why things happen. We aim to develop children who are confident, curious and knowledgeable young scientists.
Our Science curriculum provides children with a strong foundation in biology, chemistry and physics, alongside the skills they need to think and work scientifically. Children learn through a range of practical investigations, observations, comparisons, research and outdoor learning, giving them opportunities to apply their knowledge and develop their understanding through real experiences.
As children move through school, they build on and revisit their previous learning, developing increasingly secure scientific knowledge, vocabulary and working scientifically skills. Children are encouraged to ask increasingly challenging questions, investigate them independently and use evidence to explain what they have discovered.
Scientific vocabulary is an important part of every Science lesson, helping children to talk confidently about their learning and explain their observations and findings. We also introduce children to a range of scientists and explore how their discoveries and ideas have shaped the world around us.
Science begins in the EYFS, where children develop their understanding of the world through exploration, observation and hands-on experiences. This foundation is built upon throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, with children becoming increasingly independent in planning and carrying out investigations.
We make the most of our school grounds and outdoor environment, providing opportunities for children to observe and investigate the natural world and develop a sense of responsibility and respect for living things and our environment. We also make meaningful connections between Science and other areas of the curriculum, including STEM, reading and technology, helping children to understand the important role Science plays in everyday life and in the world of the future.
Our aim is for every child to leave Cottam with a love of Science, a strong body of scientific knowledge and the confidence to ask questions, investigate and make sense of the world around them.
