PREVENT
Prevent is part of the Government’s wider counter-terrorism strategy and aims to safeguard individuals from being drawn into extremism or radicalisation. Under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, schools and local authorities have a legal responsibility, known as the Prevent Duty, to help protect children and young people from these risks.
At Cottam Primary School, the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of every child are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where children feel valued, respected and able to express their thoughts and questions openly. We celebrate diversity and help our pupils develop an understanding of Britain as a multicultural society, encouraging respect for people of all backgrounds, beliefs and identities.
Through our curriculum, values education and promotion of critical thinking, we support children in developing the skills they need to make informed choices, build positive relationships and show kindness and respect towards others, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability or additional needs.
Our Prevent Risk Assessment outlines the measures we take to keep pupils safe and reduce the risk of radicalisation. It helps staff recognise when a child may be vulnerable and ensures appropriate support is provided. It also details the safeguarding procedures we follow whenever concerns are raised by any member of our school community.
These measures are carefully considered across the following areas:
Welfare and Safeguarding
Curriculum and Learning
Organisational Culture
Management of Premises
Online Safety
External Factors
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for Prevent is Mrs K Rainford, Headteacher.
