“Exercise is the key not only to physical health but to peace of mind.”

Miss E Jeens is the subject lead for PE and School Sports at Cottam.

At Cottam Primary School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality, inclusive and progressive Physical Education (PE) curriculum that is fun, engaging and challenging for all pupils. Our ambition is to develop healthy, active and confident children who enjoy physical activity, develop a lifelong love of sport and understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

We follow the Complete PE curriculum, which provides a broad and balanced programme of learning designed to develop pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding of physical activity. From Reception to Year 6, learning is carefully sequenced to ensure that skills build progressively, with opportunities for every child to develop their abilities, experience success and achieve their personal best. Our curriculum offers a wide range of sporting activities, ensuring that lessons are inclusive, appropriately challenging and accessible to all pupils.

We recognise that PE is about much more than physical skills. Through high-quality teaching, pupils develop teamwork, communication, resilience, determination, sportsmanship and respect. We aim to nurture positive attitudes towards physical activity while supporting children’s self-esteem, aspirations and emotional and physical wellbeing. Pupils learn about the importance of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle and how regular physical activity can contribute to their long-term health.

At Cottam Primary School, we place a strong emphasis on competitive sport, outdoor learning and extracurricular opportunities. We aim to provide a wide variety of experiences both within and beyond the curriculum, giving all pupils the opportunity to discover new interests, develop their talents and participate in sporting activities. Through internal competitions, external events and tournaments, children learn to celebrate success, respond positively to challenges and demonstrate the values our Cottam values.

Our PE curriculum is delivered by trained staff who use consistent assessment approaches to monitor progress and identify opportunities for further development. This enables us to build on pupils’ prior learning, address individual needs and ensure that every child is supported to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence as they move through school.

We are proud to be involved in the School Games Mark, reflecting our commitment to promoting physical activity, school sport and participation. We value the opportunities that school sport provides for children to represent their school, develop sporting values and challenge themselves to achieve their personal best.

Ultimately, our aim is for every child at Cottam Primary School to leave us with the knowledge, skills, confidence and enthusiasm to enjoy physical activity, make healthy choices and lead an active life both now and in the future.

Swimming

In Year 4, children will go swimming every Thursday morning during the Autumn term at West View Centre where they have lessons delivered by a specialist swimming instructor. Swimming caps must be worn and earrings should be removed.

PE Kit and Jewellery

Children come into school on PE days dressed in their school PE kit.

  • School PE t-shirt

  • Navy blue shorts, skort, leggings or joggers

  • Black trainers

  • Children can wear their school jumper over their PE kit.

  • Optional: navy blue hoodie with school logo

Pupils must remove earrings and watches for PE. Tape is not allowed. If you are considering having your child's ears pierced, please do so at the beginning of the summer 6-week break to ensure your child does not miss any PE lessons.
