Year 2 Phonics and Spelling
When children enter Year 2, they are expected to be able to read and write all the graphemes they have been taught and be secure in Phase 5 phonics. During Year 2, children will be taught Phase 6 phonics, which focuses on developing greater independence and accuracy in reading and spelling.
As the year progresses, children will move towards exploring and applying a wider range of spelling patterns and rules, alongside the Year 2 common exception words, helping them to become confident and accurate spellers. This will build on their phonics knowledge and support them in applying their spelling skills across all areas of their writing.
